The customer
The University Hospital Erlangen (Universitätsklinikum Erlangen UKEr) is a third-level hospital that has been delivering the highest level of medical care to the population of the Nuremberg region and Northern Bavaria since its foundation in 1815. More than 7,500 employees in 24 clinics, 19 departments and 7 institutes are committed to ensuring that patients receive optimum care from the day they are admitted to the day they are discharged and that they benefit from the latest treatment options. Successfully integrating patient care with teaching and research practices is made a priority at the university hospital. Moreover, research results obtained in Erlangen set new standards in prevention, diagnostics and therapy.

The project
When the university hospital was looking for a company PACS that should replace the different PAC systems in use until then and make their image data completely and consistently available to the clinical users, the UKEr found the best solution with the medical IT specialist synedra after a three-step tendering process. The project consists of two phases. Phase 1 comprises the hospital-wide image distribution and the integration and partly replacement of a total of 10 PAC systems. Phase 2 comprises the migration of reports and structured data into the new system and the implementation of certain use cases, such as photo documentation and ad-hoc scanning.
The PACS and multimedia viewer synedra View will assume the role as the universal viewing and editing solution, which—as a special highlight—is able to display all a patient’s available structured data in a configurable patient record view. Moreover, synedra View impresses its users with a wide array of tools to support research and teaching practices and to prepare clinical presentations and radiological demonstrations. An embedded version of synedra View, which can be seamlessly integrated into the clinical information system, and the HTML5-based web viewer synedra Web will allow the users at the UKEr to realize smooth and consistent medical workflows. Moreover, the scanning workflow will be realized by a scanning module that has been specifically developed for the university hospital.
Another key criterion for the university hospital was the system being scalable—a requirement that was perfectly met by synedra’s custom-tailored solution.
